Quick-Setting Homemade Soap

The homemade, quick-setting soap has become an economic miracle among families that use laundry soap in washing clothes. This quick-setting soap can be made in less than 30 minutes and can help save money for food. The homemade, quick-setting soap bar can also become part of a product line in a small-scale, income-generating project.

Below are the steps in making homemade, quick-setting soap bar.

Ingredients:

1 kilo    cooking oil (Coconut oil can be used. Crude coconut oil is also utilized in
             making this inexpensive soap.)
200       grams caustic soda
2          teaspoons sodium silicate
100 g    soda ash
8           drops perfume ( Lemon oil, ilang-ilang oil, citronella can be used.)

Materials:

Plastic pail
Wood or stainless steel spoon (Please do not use aluminum because of the reactions.)
Cup for water
Measuring scale of any kind.
Molds (Any plastic materials, soft-drink cups, or any plastic cups.)

Procedure:

  1. Pour two cups of water into the plastic pail.
  2. Add 100 grams of soda ash and stir until mixture dissolves in water.
  3. Add 200 grams of caustic soda to the mixture. Stir carefully without spilling the mixture on skin or clothing. Be careful without not to allow children to be around in order to avoid accidents; the caustic soda will heat the water solution and make fumes.
  4. Add one kilo of oil to the mixture and stir in one direction for 15 minutes. The solution becomes thick  at this time. (Give your soap a desired color by adding dye to the oil.)
  5. Add sodium silicate and perfume to the solution and sir in the same direction for another 15 minutes or until the solution gets thick.
  6. Pour the solution carefully into the molds and keep it there for six hours. (Be sure the soap has already thickened before removing it from the molds.)
  7. You may use this creamy-white wash soap after leaving it aside to settle for three days.

Economic importance. The raw materials are cheap and can be obtained from a commercial chemical company. The economical homemade soap bar can help you save some of the money you would normally spend for commercial soap bars.
